Explanation: A number of years ago Jason Kottke wrote a blog post complaining about his Mac’s performance. Due to its whiny tone, it was soon spoofed all over popular tech forums as a troll starting a flame war on a given popular topic. As with all internet culture, the troll text itself became a meme which then got repeated with more esoteric topics for the benefit of the handful of other people also in on the joke.
Here are a few samples (the linked google search above returns 600 results!): this one (cats), this one (semaphores), this one (Mac trolling) and the earnest replies on this one (TI calculator) and this one (vi vs emacs) are pretty awesome as well.
Now, mind you, I first found out about kottke.org after I saw someone on Slashdot explain the troll, maybe two or three years ago. I have a special connection with this troll. It was even worth a mention in the (now, unfortunately deleted) Slashdot Trolling Phenomena Wikipedia article.
I could seriously live with being a scholar in internet culture.
