Arc's Out →
Which is why, incidentally, Arc only supports Ascii. MzScheme, which the current version of Arc compiles to, has some more advanced plan for dealing with characters. But it would probably have taken me a couple days to figure out how to interact with it, and I don’t want to spend even one day dealing with character sets. Character sets are a black hole. I realize that supporting only Ascii...

Telco immunity stalled: Senate blocks key vote →
Holy crap. I want me some “retroactive immunity”. That’s just hot.
Choice quote:
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both voted against the Republican cloture motion today. Despite the risk of angering surveillance supporters in her moderate base, Clinton reaffirmed her opposition to the immunity grants in a statement to liberal blog Firedoglake today.

It’s for this reason that I like Tumblr. Once I’m done my current side-project, I want to write a ‘TumblrDumpr’ via it’s wonderfully accessible API, assuming it’s as functional as I’ve...

I fucking HATE trying to remember tar xvfz or xvjf or whatever it was everytime I want to open a tar.gz or a tar.bz2. There’s a bug in the install script, but this little thing is solid. Add it to your path today.

I really wish soft links were available in Windows
Out of all the POSIX-y features I’m used to, I think that one would immediately make the most difference during my IT housecalls. It’s surprising how often people don’t use partitions correctly, and it’d all disappear if I could just drop in a soft link instead of shortcuts.
My favourite result for the US Democrat primaries
I’ve been saying this for a while now, but I’d like to have it in writing:
Hilary Clinton wins, and has the good sense to ask Barack to be her VP.
Then we still have Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton plus the US’ first female president, plus a black VP AND Bill Clinton as the first gentleman.
How awesome would that be? I think, pretty awesome.

Read a few messages in that one. People get into such heated arguments!
You have to give the Lisp people some credit: the shiny pedestal they’re shouting from is, in fact, a solid, firm mass of righteousness. They are basically correct in their assertion that the vast majority of us are, in fact, unwashed heathens in comparison to their macro-enabled, parens enveloped, functional selves.

Excellent break down by bunnie, essentially a very talented hardware guy. I may have to adjust my geek-lust for an adult-sized version of the XO’s keyboard, tho, which is unlikely to be coming anytime soon.

I think these charts are probably in the top five most useful features of Wikipedia. I can’t count the number of times I’ve needed to make a quick judgement call on a piece of software (distros, file system, editor, bug tracker, wiki, media players, just off the top of my head) and just guessed the name of its corresponding comparison article. Most information you could possibly want...
Time-Lapse Video - How Techmeme Change Over Time →
This is incredible. I didn’t know this site existed, but this time lapse video totally fulfilled my mental image of how tech news just seeps and commentary flows around it. I remember some of those headlines; I could stand to watch a 10 minute version of this once a week.
What I want is closer to my own personal Reddit, or Digg, or something like that (but not quite like them, either). I don’t want you to come to my site and see what I’ve posted most recently. RSS can take care of that. I want you to see what other people have voted as my best entries. On my site. You shouldn’t have to go to Reddit to get a decent directory of my blog. Anyway, you...
Bah to US Customs and the TSA
So, we arrived yesterday. In a nutshell, we lost our connecting flight because of the hour we stood waiting in line for US Customs, and the 45 minutes it takes to go through another security check and taking a shuttle to the other end of the airport. All things considered this was roughly bearable, it just took a forever. What really irks me is: Having a “connecting” flights lane in...

Ew, ew, ew. I always thought the old logo was swank. The new one is just… generic. Speaking of logos featuring Xs, my heart goes out to the old school X server logo. To me, it still feels very modern and sleek.
Spider-Man: One More Day - Wikipedia, the free... →
Having grown up reading Spiderman, a lot, I have to say, goddamnit guys, this is ridiculous. Just come up with a new set of characters already! I imagine it must be fun to reinvent everything every now and then, but that story line is so incredibly lame. They got rid of their marriage and their child so his ancient aunt could live a little bit longer and Peter didn’t have to live with the...
Extra France thoughts
Paris is synonymous with grafitti. The concept of “well done” does not exist here. “Well done” does not mean “burn the thing, and yet leave the inside pink”. I should just stop being a wuss and eat it like they do; its just, stuff that raw just goes against everything I was told as a child. Im really going to miss buying fresh bread and croissants every...
